Some of you have heard about the amazing Pop Up Hood that is happening here in Oakland. If you're not familiar with it, take a few minutes to watch this inspiring video.

I'm very excited to be involved in such an innovative and exciting project as part of Crown Nine, one of the 5 stores that opened in December.

Last week I visited the Pop Up Hood retailers with my trusty camera to share my favorite picks from each shop. Come down to Old Oakland for lunch and a little shopping trip. Old + new = the best of both worlds.

Start off your exploration with lunch at Tamarindo, Cafe 817 or old school Ratto's. All three are solid choices and offer outdoor seating for this glorious weather we've been having.

Wander over to Piper and John's General Goods for a modern day general store experience.

On the corner of 9th and Broadway sits Manifesto Bicycle. I dream of building my bike collection and there are more than a few beauties at Manifesto that I would be proud to own.

Finally, around the corner is Sticks and Stones Gallery which occupies a lovely brick lined space. They were in the middle of installing a new show when I was making the rounds, but they have amazingly fun art openings, so definitely check out their calendar of events.

If you still have hours left in your day, explore Oakland Chinatown. I much prefer it San Francisco's version, as it's a bit more tame. You could also hop on the free Broadway shuttle and head Uptown for great food, bar and live music options. Or take the shuttle towards Jack London Square and explore this industrial wonderland (home to my studio) and some of my favorites like Chop Bar, Blue Bottle, and Heinolds.

I love me some vintage goodies, but don't often have time to do serious thrifting. I often find myself scouring ebay and etsy for cool duds. It's much easier for me to determine the wearability of a vintage piece if I can see it on a person v.s. a ramshackle rack or bin to be sifted through. Taking it one step further is the lookbook. Granted you can't really shop from a vintage lookbook as the pieces are one of a kind, but it does whisk me away to a happy place and give me inspiration for shopping the other items available and styling them in my own way. Love these images from Secret Shop's lookbook. Bonus points: the newest features Frankie Raydar.

Things have been very busy, as they so often are around the holidays, and even more so when you make something that people want to buy to give for the holidays.

Last week I had a moment to breathe and I decided it was about time that I make my engagement ring.

My fiancé took my advice (good boy) when he proposed and did so with what will become by wedding band. I had my Grammy's gorgeous diamond that I wanted to use, and seriously....trying to find a jeweler the engagement ring of her dreams? Good luck.

My ring is inspired by the heavy Egyptian influence during the Art Deco design period after the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. I've always been fascinated by the mystery that surrounded the excavation, as well as the allure of far away places.

I hand carved my ring in wax and then cast it in 18k yellow gold, my absolute favorite. Two pyramids capture the bezel set diamond, flanked by slithering snakes with diamonds in their heads. Just strangely awesome enough for my taste.

Having grown up and lived my very young adult life in New England, the east coast forever has a hold on me. I have been living in Northern California for more than six years now and I have noticed my design sense changing and evolving because of it. I feel like I have dueling selves sometimes when it comes to how I design and what I'm drawn to. The good news is that style is a mash up of your personal inspiration (in my opinion) so I don't have to choose. However, I definitely have what I call "my west coast self" and "my east coast self," both of whom I will introduce you to. Today, meet west coast Sarah.

The amazing couple for whom I made these wedding bands got married on 11/11/11. Best wedding day ever, I'm a tad jealous.

Hers is a simple yellow gold band with diamonds that descend and radiate out from the center stone on her engagement ring when placed on top.

His is my shipwreck wood texture band in a masculine weight with a slight wave.

I love how they weren't concerned about matching, but rather getting a ring that fit their individual personality.

I'm a big believer in choosing a ring that YOU love. After all, you're the one that is going to wear it always and forever.

Meet Crown Nine!

I'm so excited to announce that I am partnering with two other amazingly talented jewelers to open a retail boutique called Crown Nine: Jewelers and Makers.

If you know me personally, you know that I've always dreamed of opening my own store and that I have an undying love for the city of Oakland.

Being part of opening Crown Nine is really the perfect pairing of these two things. The store is part of the popuphood project, which is essentially a genius way of revitalizing the city block by block.

Crown Nine will feature local quality crafted goods in addition to the work of the three house jewelers including yours truly, Kate Ellen Metals, and Aiko Designs.

The space is truly magnificent, filled with streaming light and industrial details. The "heart" of the store will be a sturdy table made form reclaimed wood that will play host to a series of classes, work shops and trunk shows with the goal of involving and giving back to the community.

I'll of course be sharing more, but in the meantime I'm happy to introduce you to my lovely and insanely talented partners in the project: Kate Ellen Metals & Aiko Designs.

I have a confession. I don't wear jewelry everyday. Most days I'm dirty and covered in metal dust or polishing compound and wearing jewelry just doesn't make sense. There have been countless times when, running frantically from the studio to complete an errand in record time, I have been caught. A jewelry designer not wearing jewelry. Busted.

But these? I would wear these daily, or more like never part from them.

That was the general idea behind this recent custom project. A pair so lovely and sparkly that you can't help but want them on your ears at all times. Also, a pair so petite and lightweight that they will be enjoyed instead of nestled snugly in a jewelry box.

These scattered diamond hoops turned out just as I had hoped and may even make an appearance in my permanent collection.

I belong to the Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) and they recently put on their yearly event, Designers By The Bay. It is basically a showcase of all women Northern California designers open to the trade only. It was great to see old friends and meet new designers that I have long admired. Shreve & Co. hosted the event that was full of schmoozing, industry insiders, champagne and delicious treats.

On a serious note, I really began thinking about how far women have come in the jewelry industry. Really, 20-30 years ago women jewelers were virtually non-existent. It was a trade for the boys club. And, certainly no women owned and operated their own jewelry design businesses. It feels rewarding to be part of a changing industry and proud to know so many women designers that, like myself, struggle to succeed in an over saturated and predominately mass produced market. That night I felt proud for each and every one of us and realized the importance of what I'm doing. It's just jewelry, and it's not just jewelry all at the same time.

Running a business is fun, but also really really stressful. Last week my hubby and I took an impromptu road trip to unwind. We headed due east to the wilds of California gold country. It was here, in 1848, that gold was first discovered. We spent two days meandering old mining and ghost towns without a care in the world. It was magic.

This recent commissioned piece was inspired by Van Gogh's classic Starry Night painting. I used various sizes of diamonds and Australian Sapphires in this totally unique cigar band. It was so much fun carving the swirls and striations into the metal. I really just let myself go and be creative with this one, and i'm so glad I did.

Last Thursday I was lucky enough to outfit models for Kajan Padraig with my jewels for a charity fashion show. The production, organized by GO, raised money to fund the construction of a sustainable clean water well to serve more than 4,00 people in Tanzania.

GO (Groundwork Opportunities) has projects all over the world. In fact, my fiancé and I are considering volunteering abroad in Africa or Southeast Asia as an extension to our honeymoon next year. What, did you think we'd sit on the beach in Hawaii for 10 days? Nah....not us!

This was the first time I have ever helped out backstage at a fashion show, and it was pretty intense! All I could think about was how nervous I would be if I had to walk the runway and then rush back stage and change in about a minute flat.

I'm very excited to see the images form the actually runway show and will be sure to share them.

it's not easy...

Custom design, that is. But, it in the end it is so worth it. I had the chance to work with an amazing couple recently that I was very excited to design for.

The process of custom work generally begins with a lot of back and forth and sketches and quotes and decisions. I'm always really nervous when I actually start creating the piece(s). I sort of dread that time between starting to make something and actually seeing it take shape-the unknown, I guess.

In the end I'm usually very pleased with what I've created, but the nerves seep in again when it is time to present to a client. Wedding jewelry is so important. Will they like it? Will they love it? Will the size be just perfect?

This client was ecstatic when I presented her with her reworked engagement ring, and nothing makes me happier.

Her ring and band were inspired by one of the couple's favorite places, a river in the wilderness that they hold dear to their heart. Her rings in white gold capture the movement of water in the subtlest of ways.

His band is a good solid men's hammered ring in yellow gold.

I'm in love.

Chloe Makes Music...

Or, I should say Chloe makes really, really good music. We headed out to the historic Great American Music Hall Wednesday night to see the songbird perform, bedecked in my jewels nonetheless. She wore my oxidized fishbone necklace and bracelet and the crystal bullet charm necklace. Lookin' good, Chloe!

Chloe is super sweet and amazingly talented. Her album has been on repeat in the studio as of late. Chloe's dreamy voice and lyrics whisk me away to another time and place (one where I'm not meticulously polishing, grinding and soldering tiny things) and I don't ever what to come back.

So, I've been adamant about not "getting into" the whole wedding/bride thing for some strange reason. I guess because I'm a far cry from your traditional lady. Then I realized that I love parties, I love food, I love design, I love decorating, I love plotting and planning, I love jewelry (duh), and I love clothes. So...aren't these the most import parts of a wedding? Oh, well there's love too-but we've got that part down pat.

Anyway, this is my one and only general warning that there may be some wedding posts popping up over the next year. Warning, warning, warning!

This whole revelation was spawned by the Marchesa S/S '12 collection revealed recently at NYFW.

It had me dreaming of running around like an art deco forest nymph in an ethereal dress on my big day with a messy up do, stained red lips, wide eyes and dewy skin.

I recently made this set of bands for a Bay Area couple that got married at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Um, hello? How awesome is that? If I could get married anywhere it would be at a museum, the OMCA to be precise.

I love how the raised part of her band wraps around the ring like a blade of grass. It looks good from any angle. The diamonds add an extra bit of specialness. I also made pretty little gifts for the bridesmaids, so stay tuned to see those.

It was wonderful to see loyal customers and meet new ones during my trunk show at Stephen Gallant Jewelers on Cape Cod a few weeks back. Thank you to everyone that came out to shop and show support during one of the most fabulous beach days of the year. Now, that takes some serious dedication from even from the most adamant jewelry lover!
Perhaps my favorite moment of the day. Steve (my very first jewelry mentor) actually sized a ring for ME, instead of the other way around. Thanks Steve!

...where to begin?

So much has been going on lately, and I'm way behind in sharing. I guess I'll transport back in time a few weeks and share some personal news-I'm engaged! The love of my life (past 8 years officially, but back to middle school in my dreams) asked me to be his lady for life and I couldn't be happier. We were camping at the Russian River in Northern Cali and post swim he proposed. It was weird, like it wasn't really happening, and then it was over and we were back to our content little life.

To say that we're a non traditional couple is a bit of an understatement. My engagement ring (this pretty little St Kilda number) will become my wedding band once I get around to making my engagement ring. We like to do things backwards, as in live together for 8 years, buy a house, get married at some point. And kids? I have 2 already and am hoping for a third. They're cute, furry and require my attention only on occasion. Our wedding plan so far includes a motorcycle club, food truck, cupcakes and a city park.

2nd annual cape cod trunk show!

Is there really a better way to shop than at a trunk show? I think not. It's certainly my favorite way-you get to meet the artist/designer, learn about what you're purchasing and see extra special treasures that you wouldn't otherwise get the chance to peruse.

I love being on the other end as well. Meeting my customers is truly a treat!

I'm always busy, but usually I can squeeze in half an hour to write a blog post a couple times a week. As of late, this has not been so. I've been welcoming 12 hour studio days with sort-of open arms. My view for the past solid 2-3 weeks has been bench, tools, jewelry and furiously working hands. I've been working on wedding projects, prepping for meetings in NYC and for a trunk show on gorgeous Cape Cod. Red-eye tonight to the East Coast. Much more to share soon, promise. xo

It's no secret I love my city. Last weekend I came out to sell my jewelry and celebrate local businesses and do-gooders at the Oakland Indie Awards. Like any public Oakland event, there was great music, insane food and the most amazing people. The kind you didn't even know existed (example: woman, dressed to the nines, welder by trade, urban gardening pioneer & food blogger in spare time, and totally beautiful and sweet). I mean, where do these people come from? The answer? Everywhere, and they end up here, and I love it.

If my boyfriend had it his way, I think we'd up and travel the world like nomads until we were old and gray. While I share this sentiment, I also desire to grow my business which I think would be nearly impossible without a studio and an address.
Lately he's been obsessing over getting a vintage VW camper bus and traveling our great nation instead. While I poo-pooed the idea at first (like I do most, it is my job as the female to crush all his boyhood dreams.) I came around as usual (king size bed, puppy, mulch in the backyard are other examples). Well, I guess I more than came around. All I've been thinking of lately is packing up and heading to the desert, or the beach or the mountains. Exploring all of California that I still haven't gotten the chance to. Craigslist and Ebay: prepared to be stalked by me until said 1968-1974 VW fixer is located.

A stylist for Benefit Cosmetics borrowed some of my jewelry a while back to use for a photo shoot for their website. I recently spied my giant treasure coin necklace and my gothic revival necklace on two lovely models in a cute feature called "the F word." No, not the F word...it's a guide to flirting :)

I love Benefit's cheeky vibe and the fact that they produce an amazing product, but don't take themselves too seriously. I also love the classic entrepreneurial story about the two sisters that started the business. It's women like them that inspire me to keep pushing forward.

I'm very excited to finally unveil my new collection! Inner Earth is inspired by formations that occur inside the earth and includes crystals and geodes as well as hand carved metal pieces in silver and bronze with diamonds. I listen to a lot of music (and conspiracy talk radio, but that's another topic all together) when spending long days in the studio and tire quite quickly of most. There are a few exceptions, one being Bright Eyes or anything with Conor's disarming voice. Over and over and over. Conor, never do I tire of you tugging at my fragile emotions, fueling my self-pity, feeding my fear of death, love, and regret, and making me treasure the fleeting moments in life that are genuine.

Ever since I purchased my home last summer I've been relentless searching for just the right faux taxidermy-like pair of wall hangings for either side of a big antique mirror that sits atop my fireplace mantle. I really want something quirky and unusual, and I need a pair. I'm still kicking myself for losing an ebay auction months ago for two vintage white ceramic rhino heads. Hey you city-dwellers, you'll surely appreciate the design blog loving. living. small.

The idea is to encourage living with style in small spaces under 1,000 sf. As the proud owner of a petite bungalow in a city, I know first hand how valuable space is. Sometimes I wish there was just a few hundred more square feet or an extra room, but for the most part, I truly do love living small. The things you acquire cannot just be things any longer. They have to be functional, important, or really, really cool.

I also believe (commence preaching) that living with less is better for everyone. What if we all moved into existing homes instead of building bigger, newer ones? What if we needed less to furnish and fill these houses? What if we used less to heat and light them? Less blight, less stuff, less waste of precious energy.

As a general rule, "family" jewelry (mother's rings and necklaces where a birthstone represents each child/grandchild) is hideous. The idea, however, is quite good. I'm all about jewelry having meaning to the wearer, but it has to be pretty too, right? This custom necklace is meaningful and pretty. The two rings signify the union of marriage and four little diamonds twinkle, one for each little darling in the family. It's wonderfully classic with a long opera length chain that adds a modern twist.

Albert Paley is best known as a sculptor, but he got his start in the metals arts on a smaller scale. I love this necklace of his because it is simple in its' shape and pretty bada**. The dagger pendant is 19" long! Look closer and you'll find it is technically amazing in its construction, something that I certainly appreciate as a jeweler. The best of both worlds.

splendid decaying monuments

Sometimes pretty pictures are just pretty pictures, but sometimes they have something to say. Initially I was drawn to these images because, well, they are breathtaking. When I read about them I was pulled in further. The Parisian photographers, Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, have captured Detroit's urban ruins. "Splendid decaying monuments," they are lovingly named. "No less than the Pyramids of Egypt, the Coliseum of Rome, or the Acropolis in Athens, remnants of the passing of a great Empire."
Now, I have never stepped foot in the city of Detroit, but I feel taken by the images just the same. I think partially because Oakland shares some of the same negative perception that Detroit does. Because of this, I feel akin to a place I've never visited. I know that amongst the blight and despair, there are people trying to rebuild their city, people being creative in abandoned warehouses, entrepreneurs seeing opportunity just under the surface. It takes heart to live in a city like Oakland or Detroit. People scrunch their faces at the mere mention of your hometown. Just like it's worth it to Oaklanders to bear the scrutiny, I'm sure it is for the people of Detroit. Why? Because we know our city is slowly transforming and will take shape into something great, different than before, but great.
These images also feel so current and important to me. In them lies the lesson that the Detroit of the early to mid 20th century with its version of the faster, more, better, mass-produced American dream is unsustainable. What created that Detroit is ultimately what destroyed it. A great lesson for our nation and the world can be learned from this and applied on so many levels as we move forward in these tumultuous times.
Finally, I simply find them beautifully haunting. In the lost, the abandoned, the forgotten is usually where I, personally, find the most beauty.

I just returned from a two week backpacking adventure with my boyfriend in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula-I'll be sharing a few travel pics soon. We had an amazing time, but being a workaholic I'm very glad to be home and get cracking on all the new projects I have in the works. This site is like the best virtual antique sale ever. Furniture, decor, art and general oddities are exquisitely staged , photographed, and up for sale. Yes, it's very expensive. And yes, you could probably find many of these items at a deep discount scouring thrift stores, craigslist and yard sales making them good as old/new again with some elbow grease. But, will you actually follow through? If yes, then good for you. If not, then save your pennies darlings, because you never know when you'll just HAVE to have a ready-made vintage light bulb collection or a paint-by-number jesus canvas. Love.

Okay. Have mercy on me. This is my first ever outfit post. I know that so many bloggers do it, and they do it well. But, what a great way to show how I wear my jewelry on a daily basis. I could no longer resist giving it a try.

Most days I dress like this. Pretty darn casual. Really for me it's about being cute and practical. On any given day I'm in the studio getting dirty, then have to meet a client, run errands and then end the day back in the studio. So I like to look put together and cool, but heels, pencil skirts and suit jackets....so not me.

I have a large hat collection. They're perfect for covering opti-visor hair from working in the studio. Slouchy knit hats are my current fave. Sneakers and flats-I live in them in my day to day life. My old-school converse high tops are my babies. Never will I tire of them.

is spent in an art museum! San Francisco's De Young Museum to be exact. Certain Fridays throughout the year, the museum hosts a free party that includes entertainment & a bar. The entire building is open and lends itself to aimless wandering among masterpieces young and old. Pieces and artists recognizable and obscure. You almost feel as if you shouldn't be there, but then, in the distance you hear the sweet song of a live opera singer. In the hall of the Ancient Americas you pass another couple and flash a smile. They too share your secret of a night at the museum nestled deep inside the infamous Golden Gate Park.

I've come oh so close to the perfect find at several thrift stores, but the problem always lies in the fit. It seems that someone petite in stature has always just been through and taken all the versions for us folks slight in frame. Oh, the quest continues.

I've pretty much fallen in love with every engagement ring I have created thus far. This one in particular really stole my heart. There comes a point in the design process where grand ideas must be translated into a piece of jewelry that is wearable. This is most important with an engagement ring because it is worn always and forever. This piece really nails that delicate balance. The ring was created to look as much like a tree branch as possible without being too literal. It is earthy and organic without compromising a modern sophisticated elegance. Not to mention, the diamond-wow! The ring has moved on to its new happy home, but that doesn't mean I'm not still dreaming about it....

Hello all! My life has been very full lately. I've recently started running my business full time, I just purchased my very first home, and, among other things, a new Sarah Swell photo shoot!

Organizing a shoot always makes me crazy. There are so many details to remember and somehow, no matter what, everything is up in the air until the very last moment-this time was no exception. But, in the end everything fell deliciously into place. The photographer and model were amazing, as was the hair and make-up artist. The famous San Francisco fog began to creep in late afternoon to suppress the harsh sun as if on cue. The crowds that were in the city that day for a baseball game began to thin, and then-magic!

New cuff bracelets! Cuffs are my favorite because they stay put on your wrist and whatever is suppose to be showing (the diamond, in this case) stays visible. The concrete cuff bracelet features clean lines and a slightly rough and rugged surface inspired by city streets. The matte silver and oxidized silver look oh-so-cool when layered. I've been wearing these daily-I cannot get enough! They will be showcased in the Marin Store's November catalog, but if you simply cannot wait until then, contact me and I'll see what I can do :)

I'm in loooove with this set of custom wedding bands I created! They compliment each other without being too matchy-matchy. Hers features an organic texture and beautiful diamonds all the way around. His is oxidized silver in the center (cast from a piece of fan coral) with textured white gold sides that mimic her band.

My shackle jewelry is often interpreted in different ways. Some people blush (no, no, they're not that kind of shackles) and some get an equestrian reference. Well, my inspiration for this collection was actually the shipping industry. Shackles are often used in the rigging systems of many types of boats. I loved how the "pin" that goes through the shackle allowed me to come up with creative ways to connect the shackle links.

Below is my newest piece in the collection, the Shackle Long Necklace. It's a bit funky and edgy and totally perfect for a plain white boyfriend tee.

Last weekend's trunk show at Stephen Gallant Jewelers on beautiful Cape Cod was an all around successful event! The lovely ladies who planned the event did an amazing job with advertising, refreshments, organizing a charity raffle, and helping me with sales. We all had a great time and are already planning for round 2 next summer. The day went by almost too quickly and I got to meet some amazing people.
